This page is a beginner-friendly guide to music hardware, recording equipment, microphones, headphones, audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, studio monitors, cables, and other tools used to create and record music.

You don't need an expensive professional studio to get started. A computer, a decent pair of headphones, and the right basic equipment can be enough to begin creating music and learning how everything works.

I'm putting this resource together to help beginners understand what different pieces of music equipment actually do, what they're useful for, and what you may or may not need depending on the kind of music you're trying to make.

Start with what you have, learn as you go, and build your setup one piece at a time.

1. 💻 The Computer — The Heart of a Modern Studio

For computer-based music production, you'll generally want:

  • Laptop or desktop
  • USB ports
  • Headphone output or USB audio interface
  • Enough RAM
  • Fast storage
  • Reasonably powerful CPU

Minimum practical starting point

For basic recording/beatmaking:

  • 8 GB RAM — workable
  • 16 GB RAM — recommended
  • SSD storage — strongly recommended
  • Modern Intel/AMD/Apple processor

Better long-term setup

16–32 GB RAM + 1 TB SSD

This becomes particularly important once you start accumulating:

  • Sample libraries
  • Virtual instruments

  • Multitrack recordings

  • Large project files

Chromebook

Chromebooks can work surprisingly well with browser-based systems such as BandLab, but they aren't ideal for every professional DAW/plugin ecosystem.

For someone beginning on a Chromebook, I'd specifically look at:

BandLab → browser-based production → USB microphone/headphones → eventually a Windows/Mac computer if they outgrow it.

There isn't one "best microphone."

Different microphones are designed for different jobs.

Why beginners should consider dynamic microphones

They're generally less sensitive to room reflections than large-diaphragm condensers.

That's a huge advantage in a bedroom studio.

A condenser generally captures more detail, but that also means it can capture everything else in the room.

So a $100 condenser in a terrible room can sometimes produce a worse recording than a $100 dynamic microphone.

USB microphones contain their own audio interface.

That means:

Microphone → USB → computer

instead of:

Microphone → XLR → audio interface → computer

They're fantastic for beginners.

If you use an XLR microphone, guitar, bass, keyboard, or other professional audio equipment, an audio interface is one of the most important pieces of hardware in your studio.

It converts analog audio into digital audio for your computer.

It also provides:

If you're using an XLR microphone, you need an XLR cable.

Don't forget this when budgeting.

You'll eventually want multiple cables.

Good idea:

  • 1 × 10–15 ft XLR cable

🎧 7. Studio Headphones

One of the first things I'd buy after the microphone/interface.

You want closed-back headphones for recording.

Why?

They reduce the amount of music leaking from your headphones into the microphone.

Not every microphone requires a separate shock mount.

🏠 12. Acoustic Treatment

This is one of the most misunderstood pieces of studio equipment.

Acoustic treatment ≠ soundproofing.

Treatment improves the sound inside your room.

Help control reflections.

Bass traps

Designed to control low-frequency buildup.

Especially useful in corners.

Reflection filter

Believe it or not, blankets can sometimes be useful for temporary acoustic treatment.

For someone who actually plays piano, a digital piano can serve as both:

A UPS can keep equipment running during short power interruptions.

Often misunderstood.

You're going to spend a ridiculous amount of time sitting there.

Proper speaker placement matters.

A sound-pressure-level meter lets you measure listening volume.

Useful for:

  • Consistent mixing levels

There are also phone apps that can provide rough measurements, although dedicated meters are generally more reliable.

Eventually you may want a second pair of headphones with a different tonal character.

This helps you check:

Advanced.

Worth repeating because low frequencies are one of the biggest problems in small rooms.

Good bass management is considerably more useful than covering your room in cheap acoustic foam.

An advanced but extremely useful studio tool.

The biggest mistake is doing this backwards:

"$500 microphone + $2,000 speakers + $1,000 interface + untreated bedroom."

A $150–300 microphone in a reasonably controlled room, with good performance and good engineering, can produce a much better recording than an expensive microphone sitting in a terrible acoustic environment.

And the second biggest mistake is buying hardware because it looks like a studio rather than because it solves a problem.

The goal isn't to own a pile of gear.

The goal is to have everything necessary to turn an idea in your head into a finished recording.
