The 1% Rule

How A Bodybuilder Changed My Perspective in Jail

Some of the most valuable lessons in life come from the places you'd least expect.

One of mine came while I was serving time in jail waiting for sentencing.

There was a bodybuilder there who looked like he'd spent years building himself—not just physically, but mentally. One day we were talking about goals, progress, and how easy it is to become overwhelmed by the size of the things we want to accomplish.

I don't remember every word he said, but I remember the idea because it completely changed the way I think.

He told me to stop looking at huge goals as something I had to accomplish all at once.

Instead, imagine your goal as a two-year project.

Then forget about the finish line.

Your only job is to complete 1% of the journey each week.

At first, it sounded almost too simple.

One percent?

That's it?

But the more I thought about it, the more powerful it became.

Most people fail because they expect massive results in a matter of days or weeks. They sprint at the beginning, burn themselves out, and mistake slow progress for no progress.

The 1% rule flips that mindset.

Instead of asking yourself:

"How am I ever going to finish this?"

You ask:

"What's my 1% this week?"

Suddenly, overwhelming goals become manageable.

A book becomes one chapter.

A business becomes one improvement.

A healthier body becomes one workout.

A song becomes one verse.

A better life becomes one decision.

Week after week, those small efforts begin to stack.

Then something interesting happens.

The same people who thought nothing was happening start calling your success "overnight."

But you know the truth.

They didn't see the weeks.

They only saw the result.

How I Apply It Today

This philosophy has become part of nearly everything I do.

It's how I approach writing.

It's how I built my music catalog.

It's how I've developed my website.

It's how I continue building Sideon-Vibe.

Whenever a project feels too big, I stop asking how I'll finish it.

I ask what I can realistically accomplish this week.

Sometimes that's writing a single page.

Sometimes it's finishing one song.

Sometimes it's publishing one blog post.

Sometimes it's simply refusing to quit.

Every one of those actions is another brick.

The Mathematics of Consistency

Imagine improving by just 1% every week.

One week won't impress anyone.

Neither will two.

Or ten.

But after a year?

After two?

You've become someone entirely different.

Not because you changed overnight.

Because you refused to stop building.

Consistency compounds.

Just like interest in a savings account.

Small deposits don't seem significant until you look back and realize how much they've accumulated.

Life works the same way.

The Lesson I Took With Me

I left prison with very little.

But I carried one lesson with me that has shaped almost everything I've built since.

Dream big.

Work small.

Repeat often.

The mountain isn't climbed in one leap.

It's climbed one step at a time.

The wall isn't built in a day.

It's built one brick at a time.

Your future isn't created in a single moment.

It's created by the choices you make this week.

Then next week.

Then the week after that.

That's the 1% rule.

And if my music has taught me anything, it's this:

Small victories become big victories.

Invisible work becomes visible success.

Brick by brick.

Week by week.

One percent at a time.
